The 7 UK CV mistakes international students make

UK hiring differs from many other markets in small but costly ways. Here are the seven that trip up the most people we've spoken to.

1. A photo

A recruiter using an Applicant Tracking System will see a photo as a diversity risk flag, and many UK ATSes strip them out and mangle the layout. Skip the photo.

2. Date of birth

Asking for it is actually illegal under UK equality law. Don't invite the bias.

3. A three-page CV

Three-page CVs signal inefficiency; most UK recruiters reject them sight unseen. Two pages. That's the cap.

4. Overusing "I"

UK convention is implied first-person: "Led the billing migration…", "Delivered the quarterly report…". It's tighter and easier to scan.

5. Personal statements that generalise

"A hard-working team player with excellent communication skills" is wallpaper. Keep the statement role-specific and under four lines.

6. Ignoring ATS keywords

Large employers filter by keyword before human review. Mirror language from the job description, not in a stuffed-keyword way, but make sure the real skills are named the way the employer names them.

7. Inflated grades

Always state real results. UK recruiters check transcripts. Getting caught exaggerating a 2:1 into a first is a reference-killing mistake.
